SIFT welcome South Arran MPA management

SIFT believe that recently announced plans for the South Arran Marine Protected Area show "Ministerial vision"

The Sustainable Inshore Fisheries Trust (SIFT) today welcomed the recent announcement by Cabinet Secretary Richard Lochhead that scallop dredging will be ended and that restrictions on prawn trawling over sensitive areas of the seabed will be put in place in the South Arran Marine Protected Area, in the Firth of Clyde.

SIFT is currently developing a fishery management plan for the Firth of Clyde, which is designed to enhance the Firth’s fisheries and ecological status. MPAs with management measures of the type announced by the Cabinet Secretary play a vital part in such a plan, as they will aid recovery of fish stocks and the wider ecosystem.

Over the last year more than 7,000 members of the public from around the Clyde have signed up to a call from SIFT for measures to revive the local marine environment, support a diverse fishery, and promote marine management based on sound science. The sort of measures announced for South Arran MPA are a significant step towards meeting this demand.

Charles Millar, Director of SIFT, said:
“Huge numbers of residents of the Clyde’s communities want to see changes to the way the Clyde is managed. It is a public asset and needs to be managed for the public good. With this decision, Richard Lochhead has shown that the Scottish Government recognises the validity of these arguments as well as the established scientific case for spatial management. By taking this opportunity he has demonstrated the kind of Ministerial vision which Scotland's fisheries so desperately need.

“SIFT was established to promote jobs and economic development around Scotland's inshore waters. For too long there has been a myth that these objectives are at odds with conservation. The truth is that protected areas like these, are essential both for a sustainable economy and a sustainable environment."
